REMs recalculate terrain height relative to the river's own water surface, revealing ancient meander scars, oxbow lakes, and buried channels. We start with lidar-derived Digital Elevation Models at sub-foot accuracy, merge multiple survey tiles into a seamless surface, then trace the river's centerline and interpolate relative heights across the full floodplain.
The technique was pioneered by cartographer Daniel Coe of the Washington Geological Survey, whose work opened a new genre at the intersection of geomorphology and fine art.
